Nikko

We’re looking forward to trying this newcomer for a full Japanese omakase experience. (Work was underway late June inside and out in the space next to Trader Joe’s parking garage. Hopefully they’ll be open later this month or in August.) Chef Tomohiro Tamura specializes in “kaiseki” dining (small plates, fresh and simply prepared food), having worked everywhere from Tokyo to stateside in Los Angeles, Denver (Nobu), Dallas and Kentucky. Tamura is now retired but is working with Nikko’s staff on the concept and food.

Rush Bowls

The Colorado-based healthy food franchise expands to Southlake (there also are locations in Flower Mound and Keller) with customizable fruit bowls and smoothies. Check out the Bow Wow Bowl for furry friends; it includes banana, peanut butter and frozen yogurt with a Milk-Bone topper.

Frios Gourmet Pops

Formerly operating out of a Keller storefront (now the home of newly opened Cold Wave Creations; see Page 27), the frozen treat biz is now mobile. Look for the tie-dye ice pop van to be on the move in and around Keller, Southlake, Roanoke, Argyle, Trophy Club and Westlake. Follow on social media for locations.

Kilwins

Liz Bartlett’s first job was at Kilwins, the confectionery on Grapevine’s Main Street, where she worked her way up to supervisor and manager. She has reopened the shop as owner (along with other family members) of the franchise, which got its start in 1947 in Petoskey, Michigan. Everything from Granny Smith caramel apples and artisan chocolates to hand-paddled fudge and, most recently, ice cream, is prepared in-house.

Hoffbrau Steak & Grill House

The steakhouse takes over the former Brick House Tavern + Tap location (it was once the county’s first Romano’s Macaroni Grill) with an accessible menu of beef and Hoffbrau’s top seller: chicken-fried steak. No opening date has been set.
