Comings and Goings

It’s a warm weekday afternoon and plane spotters have already staked out their places at Founders’ Plaza near DFW Airport. There’s the guy in work clothes with a lanyard around his neck, taking a late lunch break as he watches cargo planes arrive. A little girl can’t take her wide eyes off the American Airlines jet cruising off into the blue sky as she takes in the scene with her brother and their parents. Out-of-town visitors check out the bronze sculpture Share the Dream by artist Dennis Smith. One guy sets up a folding camp chair and plastic footstool, rolls up the sleeves on his T-shirt and sets up for an afternoon in the sun. Others have snacks, beverages and, of course, cameras. There are benches and tables available; others spread blankets on the grassy hillside. The landscaping is lush with spring flowers and other greenery. All are here to hang out — be it for 30 minutes or for an afternoon — to take in the sights and sounds of the nearby airport. Founders’ Plaza, open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., is a prime viewing spot enjoyed by young and old aviation fans. The plaza is located at the north end of the airport; get directions on the website. Parking and access are free; 3200 E. Airport Drive. dfwairport.com/explore/foundersplaza
